Definition of Bullying - Bullying happens when someone hurts or scares another person on purpose and the person being bullied has a hard time defending himself or herself. Usually, bullying happens over and over. (Definition and characteristics from the Stop Bullying Now website)
Characteristics of bullying:
- Punching, shoving, and other acts that hurt people physically
- Spreading bad rumors about people
- Keeping certain people out of a "group"
- Teasing people in a mean way
- Getting certain people to "gang up" on others
Cherokee Elementary School will be a "Proactive instead of Reactive" school. During the week of January 11-15, 2010 Cherokee Elementary school observed "Bully Awarenss Week" where the school's counselor, Mrs. Debbie Humphries made daily announcements to remind students not to bully. Anti-Bullying Posters are now on display throughout the school and Anti-Bullying Acrostics are posted in each classroom. The students were reminded daily that "Chero-Bees are buddies, NOT Bullies". Pictured is the "Pledge to be a Buddy, NOT a Bully" poster displayed in Ms. Tammy Phagan and Ms. Juliette Furlow's Kindergarten classroom.
